Melodie Nelson is the soulful new outfit for Sydney’s Lia Tsamoglou, previously from Moonmilk, and now enjoying some much deserved attention for new album, Meditations on the Sun. After listening to this record for the first time I have imagined it to be propped neatly in my mothers stained-glass cupboard, full of all her favourite vinyl records from the 60’s and 70’s. From the warm album artwork, to the swooning, moody sounds; this one would sit neatly alongside something like The Ronettes. However listening to this dreamy, sun soaked record in full, you could, most definitely, organise it side by side a modern day female artist, such as Cat Power or Holly Throsby.
Opening the album is rich and powerful, Waiting. This track is the perfect introduction to a beautiful, bluesy record full of breathy vocals and colourful harmonies. Tsamoglou’s voice is truly her instrument and layered underneath the sweet vocals are rich, haunting tones. The lyrics are simple, but evoke wonderful imagery, “I’m waiting for you, it’s half past two.” Intertwined amongst the instrumentals are the melodic “oohs” and “aahs,” which complete this track to a produced perfection.
Title track Meditations on the Sun was definitely an album highlight for me. From the subtle strings, to the haunting whistling, this track builds into a melting pot of dark melody and instrument. The lyrics are a simple escape. Tsamoglou captivates with almost effortless vocals as the repetition of the lyrics, “Sun, shining on me today,” fill the mind, almost like a morning mantra. First single off the record, My Johnny, is full of collaborative percussion, wandering electric guitar and cool vocals. The lyrics suggest a handsome, dark, narrative of boy meets girl, “At the bar you went and took my hand, we drank soda pop and had a dance” On the back of her recent album release, Tsamoglou, has been busy will support spots with Teeth and Tongue and Jack Ladder. She also features on The Singing Skies great new release, Routine and War. However, by September this year, in Melbourne, there will be an official record release – the record of which was a pleasure to listen to.
