This self titled album, from up and coming, folk duo, Busby Marou has been pretty highly anticipated. And so it should have been. If first single off the record, Biding My Time, was anything to go by, simple melodies, intimate lyrics and effortless, cool, vocals, were well received by fans of the likes of Josh Pyke, Leeroy Lee and other Australian folk acts.
In 2010, The Busby Marou boys were actually approached by EMI big bosses to feature, as the only unsigned OZ act, on the “He Will Have His Way – the Finn Brothers Tribute Album.” Busby Marou’s version of Better Be Home Soon, was then shortly after, added to high rotation at Triple J, and paved the way for some much deserved attention and the release of first single, “Underlying Message.”
This most recent release from Busby Marou is a colourful and catchy country pop album, full of acoustic guitar, banjo and raw vocals. At first listen, the tracks all seem to sound pretty similar, a whole bunch of alternative folk tracks floating in and out of one another with no real direction or motivation. However, I must say, after a few more listens, the album takes wonderful shape.
Album highlight is definitely first single off the record, “Biding My Time”. It’s contagious, folk pop lyrics are driven by a simple narrative; waiting for a loved one to realise relationship potential, “I can be the poet, you can be the story.” The track captivates, both instrumentally and vocally, allowing for an almost sing-a-long, driving tune. The next track on the album “Banjo,” also really caught me by surprise. The simple introduction is followed soulfully by a deep crescendo full of steel guitars, banjos, and harmonica solos. Other noticeable tracks include “Paint My Cup (Early 60’s)” and gentle and intimate “Dancing on the Moon.”
Once you get your tracks in order and really listen to this album, it really will catch you unawares and. I’d say, watch this space.
