Pony Up! – Stay Gold

The truth about Stay Gold begins with a bowl of eclecticism. The record strips back to the natural, ethereal elements that make up a heart-warming collection of tracks. The latest record from Canadian fourpiece, produced by Murray Lightburn of the Dears, offers an array of time signatures and quirky lyrics, melting any indie fans’ heart.
The second track on the record, A Crutch or A Cradle, is getting a little airplay on Triple J recently, and so it should. The 3/4 rhythms combine with a heavy bass line and gentle harmonies, and as the track closes, the instruments unite for a solo, complete with wedding bells and subtle bass lines, almost like a modern day waltz.
Lyrically, the record speaks to all people sick and tired of hearing about the end of the world. With so much turmoil and pressure continually being thrown in our faces, it is nice to simplify and minimise complication. Making More Beneath is an ode to the present, the “here and now,” “You speak to me in universals and in the grand scheme of things, and that’s where you lost me ” The track is energetic and jovial, with it’s offbeat tempo, yet takes you back to when you didn’t care what day it was.
Sounds Like My Wedding Night, is a sweet, ballad, complete with marching band drum sounds and melodic vocals. Closing track, Two Square Feet, is a little rockier than the folksy sounds we are used to from Pony Up, due to the distorted guitar, and intense drum sounds. However the vocal hooks, from front singer, Lisa Wills, and harmonies from Sarah Moundroukas really make this track.
I still love The Truth About Cats and Dogs, from their last record, Make Love To The Judges With Your Eyes. However, Pony Up, will always stay gold in my books. They are currently touring with The Devoted Few, and finish up their stint in OZ at The Zoo in Brisbane, on June 18. Go and see them while they are in the country!
